What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, translated from Sanskrit as “the science of life,” is a holistic health system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. More than just medicine, it's a lifestyle rooted in the belief that true health comes from balance: between body, mind, spirit, senses, and the world around us.
Ayurveda offers time-tested tools and rituals to help us maintain that balance: from mindful eating and daily routines to breathwork, yoga, herbal remedies, and seasonal awareness.
A Brief History
Long before wellness became a buzzword, Ayurvedic knowledge was passed down through lineage and experience. Sages and healers observed nature, patterns, and people, and created a system of care that became the foundation for many modern modalities, including acupuncture, homeopathy, and polarity therapy.
Ayurveda continues to thrive today because it’s adaptable, personalized, and deeply human.
The 5 Elements
At the core of Ayurveda is the belief that everything in the universe, including us, is made up of five elements:
Ether (Space)—openness, stillness
Air—movement, change
Fire—transformation, digestion
Water—flow, cohesion
Earth—structure, stability
These elements form the building blocks of our mind-body constitution, known as the Doshas.
The 3 Doshas
The doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, are the energies that govern how we function (physically, mentally, and emotionally). Most of us have one or two doshas that are more dominant. Understanding your dosha helps you make lifestyle choices that bring you back into balance.
Vata (Air + Ether)
Creative, energetic, and intuitive when balanced. But when out of balance, Vata can bring anxiety, insomnia, and dryness.
Vata thrives on grounding, warmth, routine, and nourishment.
Pitta (Fire + Water)
Driven, sharp, and passionate when in harmony. When out of balance, Pitta may show up as anger, inflammation, or burnout.
Pitta benefits from cooling practices, downtime, and gentleness.
Kapha (Earth + Water)
Stable, loving, and calm when balanced. In excess, Kapha can lead to stagnation, heaviness, and low motivation.
Kapha thrives on stimulation, movement, and light, spicy foods.
Knowing your unique constitution (Prakriti) is like unlocking your body’s blueprint for well-being. It empowers you to eat, move, rest, and live in ways that support your natural balance.

Ayurveda & Modern Medicine: A Complementary Approach
Ayurveda doesn’t replace Western medicine, it complements it beautifully.
While allopathic medicine focuses on treating symptoms, Ayurveda focuses on prevention, personalized care, and root-cause healing. It strengthens your body, supports recovery, and enhances your overall quality of life.
Ayurveda is especially powerful for managing chronic conditions, supporting mental health, and maintaining vitality across all life stages. When used together, Ayurveda and Western medicine can create a truly integrative and empowering approach to health.
